PAT Process Interfaces

Enabling PAT for inline powder and granule applications.

PAT Process InterfacesInterfacing Process Analytical Technology (PAT) probes such as Near Infrared (NIR) and Raman with powder and granule processing presents several challenges:

  • Unlike (most) liquids and gases, granules and powder blends are not homogeneous at the scale of measurement of most PAT probes, leading to non-representative sampling and measurements.
  • Some powder/granule streams are too disperse to be directly measured with PAT probes, such as the outputs of mills and spray dryers.
  • Many powders/granules, especially those with residual moisture, will adhere to PAT probe windows over time, effectively “blinding” the probe.

Based on concepts developed and tested over many years at one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, we have commercialised several engineering solutions to the above problems, suitable for 24/7 commercial Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) deployment. These enable real-time prediction of Critical Process Parameters (CPPs) such as blend uniformity, loss on drying and particle size distribution.

Products

Our inline probe interfaces all share the same design principle: Our device is inserted into the process through a hygienic flange, and the PAT probe is inserted through our device into the process for direct product/process contact. Sampling and sample presentation occur inside the product stream such that no product is removed from the process. The devices are fully GMP-ready through Ex certification and all process-facing materials being certified for product contact.
